What Is a Weak Chin?
Weak chin refers to a poorly projected chin. This is primarily due to a deficiency in the portion of the jawbone, also known as the mandible, that forms the chin. A weak chin tends to be more obvious from a side view. The most anterior projection of a weak chin typically lies far behind the anterior projection of the lower lip.
What Causes a Weak Chin?
Weak chin is caused by genetics, though it is usually a normal anatomic variant that does not reflect or indicate a medical problem.
What Can a Weak Chin Be Confused With?
There are two (2) features of the neck that can give the appearance of a weak chin:
- Advanced aging of the neck, resulting in hanging, ropey tissue composed of skin, fat, and muscle (platysma) that severely blunts the angle between the jawline and the neck.
- An airway that sits down (inferior) and forward (anterior) relative to the jawline, which also serves to blunt the angle between the jawline and the neck. These anatomic features worsen with advanced aging in the neck as described above.
How Is a Weak Chin Treated?
Dr. Jeffrey Harmon offers two (2) treatment options for a weak chin:
- A precisely shaped silicone chin implant placed on the anterior chin through a small incision under the chin.
- Hyaluronic acid fillers, or dermal fillers for a weak chin, are placed carefully in the chin to project the soft tissue off from the bone.
The potential benefits of a silicone chin implant to treat the condition include:
- Its permanence eliminates the need for constant re-treatment with, for example, dermal fillers for a weak chin.
- Its consistent, smooth form provides more obvious, though natural-appearing, results when an appropriately sized implant is placed.
- Weak chin surgery with implant placement is an outpatient surgical procedure that can be done either with local anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation.
The potential benefits of chin fillers as an alternative treatment include:
- It is a non-surgical procedure using only needles and/or rounded micro-cannulas that can be done in an exam room instead of an operating room.
- The filler dissolves spontaneously over many months, or it can be dissolved within a few days using the injected enzyme hyaluronidase. This is a potential benefit for those who dislike the results.
A thicker, less deformable (higher G') hyaluronic acid product is used in the chin.
Before & After
Some patients start with dermal fillers for a weak chin prior to transitioning to a silicone chin implant when they feel confident with the results, as this patient of Dr. Harmon's did:
