What Are Hooded Eyes?

Hooded eyes are a term commonly used to describe eyes that look:

  • Heavier
  • More shadowed
  • Less open

than they used to be. In fact, hooded eyes are a common reason patients seek the expertise of Dr. Jeffrey Harmon in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hooded Eyes Are the Result Of

  • Volume from the eyebrows hanging down over the outer edge of the eyelids and/or
  • Excess skin in the upper eyelids hanging down towards the eyelash margin

The outer edges of the eyebrows start to fall, resulting in a more acutely angled, arched appearance closer to the eyes themselves. The associated skin and fat on the eyebrow pads fold over the edge of the eye, sometimes crowding out a view of the outer edge of the eyelid itself. Excess upper eyelid skin begins to fold on itself, gradually falling towards the margin of the eyelashes. Secondarily, some individuals develop drooping (i.e., pseudoherniated) fat in the fat pad of the upper eyelid closest to the nose in a similar process to that which causes lower eyelids bags. This upper eyelid “bag” can worsen the appearance of drooping skin by making it look fuller where it was not previously.

What Causes Eye Hooding?

Hooded eyes are primarily caused by:

  • Age
  • Genetics

Most individuals develop hooded eyes gradually in much the same way they develop drooping cheeks, jowls, and sagging tissue in the neck. However, this gradual process is typically noticed to be obvious and bothersome to patients within approximately one to two years.

Other patients have inherited heavier eyebrows that weigh down over the eyelids since they were young adults. This tends to worsen with age, as with other individuals.

The result is the same: heavier, more shadowed, less open eyes which Dr. Harmon is supremely qualified to treat as a specialist in the surgical care of the face and neck.

Why Is Dr. Jeffrey Harmon an Expert at Treating Hooded Eyes?

Dr. Jeffrey Harmon is a double board-certified, fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon. He trained in fellowship with Dr. Andrew Jacono, one of the world’s premier cosmetic facial plastic surgeons and the pioneer of the extended deep plane facelift, which is a gold-standard approach to facelift surgery. In fact, Dr. Harmon is one of the few surgeons in the world – and the only surgeon in the Midwest – fellowship trained by Dr. Jacono. Dr. Jacono’s expertise extends to cosmetic surgery of the entire face, including the eyes. This experience provided an exceptional foundation on which Dr. Harmon built his practice.

Dr. Harmon not only completed unique surgical training through the pre-eminent body that produces facial plastic surgeons, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), but he is also double board certified through both the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). These certifications required rigorous testing and years of experience to achieve. There are other certifications that physicians pursue prior to offering cosmetic surgery procedures. However, training through the AAFPRS and certification through the ABOHNS and ABFPRS are what patients should seek in physicians caring for their face.

Most importantly, Dr. Harmon has the experience and expertise that makes him particularly qualified to care for patients with concerns about hooded eyes. He has built a highly sought-after practice with a reputation for excellence over many years since his training and board certifications.
