What Is a Crooked Nose?
Crooked nose is a term for a nasal bridge that appears shifted, asymmetric, and/or off-center. Different types of crooked nose can also be described as a c-shaped or s-shaped nose. A crooked nose is asymmetric and often associated with difficulty breathing from one or both sides.
What Causes a Crooked Nose?
A crooked nose is most commonly due to genetics, though symptoms may not develop until maturation.
A second cause is trauma due to accidents from sports, motor vehicle collisions or assault. However, trauma typically needs to be quite significant for a crooked nose to develop.
What Can a Crooked Nose Be Confused With?
A crooked nose is generally not confused with another condition, from Dr. Harmon’s experience. However, the term is frequently used interchangeably with dorsal hump by patients, though this is incorrect.
How Is a Crooked Nose Treated?
Dr. Jeffrey Harmon treats a crooked nose with rhinoplasty, with or without septoplasty, for those patients who are deemed good crooked nose surgery candidates. Depending on whether the deviation is due to cartilage, bone, or both, Dr. Harmon manipulates the bone and places grafts made of cartilage in areas of deviation during a crooked nose operation to improve symmetry and open the nasal cavities. This procedure is typically an open surgical approach involving a small incision at the base of the nose along with additional incisions inside the nose on both sides.
A second, non-surgical procedure used to treat a crooked nose is hyaluronic acid fillers. Dr. Harmon does not offer fillers to treat a crooked nose. Also known as a liquid or non-surgical rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid fillers are placed in areas of deviation to fill in depressions to make the nose temporarily appear more symmetric. Dr. Harmon feels injecting significant volumes of filler on the side of the nose is potentially unsafe, especially when a crooked nose is caused by trauma. This is because scarring from trauma can make the blood supply to the nose less robust, thereby increasing the risk of vascular compression with the placement of filler on the side of the nose. Vascular compression can lead to loss of skin and severe scarring extending across the nose and face.
